Balboa Bank & Trust, S.A., located in Panama City, Panama, has a history marked by growth, transformation, and a commitment to serving our clients. Our journey began on December 23, 2002, when we were initially established as Stanford Bank (Panama), S.A. We received our General Banking License from the Superintendence of Banks of Panama on April 1, 2005, marking the beginning of our operations in the Panamanian financial sector.
A significant milestone in our history occurred in March 2010 when Strategic Investors Group, Inc. acquired full control of our shares. This acquisition paved the way for a new era of growth and expansion. On April 21, 2010, the Superintendence of Banks of Panama approved our name change to Balboa Bank & Trust Corp., reflecting our new direction and vision. We officially commenced operations under this new name on May 31, 2012.
Further strengthening our position in the market, we merged with Banco Transatlántico S.A. on December 28, 2012. This strategic merger significantly increased our assets and capital, enabling us to better serve our growing client base.
In May 2016, the Superintendence of Banks of Panama took administrative and operating control of the bank. Following this period, Balboa Bank & Trust was acquired by Grupo BCT on October 6, 2017. This acquisition brought us into the fold of a larger financial group, providing new opportunities for growth and development.
